Jose De San Martin

Known as the prime leader of South America’s struggle for independence from Spain. He was born in 1778 in Argentina, but left Argentina in 1785 to study in Spain. In 1812, he returned to Argentina and pledged to fight the Spaniards. In 1814, he began to plot to overthrow Lima, Peru. In 1817, he crossed the Andes with a large army and gave the lands of Chile to the Chilean people. He liberated Peru fully on July 28th, 1821. He is known as a national hero in Argentina. In 1822, he resigned command of his armies, and in 1824 moved to France. He was known as one of the liberators of South America. He died in 1850 (Jose De San Martin-Knight of the Andes).
